Your Identity made in the Image of God

When you were growing up, did people say how you looked like your mom or dad? My wife and I have heard many times how our kids look like us. Or maybe even more fun, do people say you look like a celebrity?

Who do you look like?

All of us have been created in an image. This includes you. You were created in God’s image.

God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them. (Genesis 1:27)

Not only do we find ourselves looking like our parents, we often find ourselves acting like them too. We all know this can be good at times, and yes, it may prove to be unhelpful at times. Wouldn’t it be awesome to carry on the traits of a perfect Father in Heaven? John tells us that God is love.

7 Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God. 8 The person who doesn’t love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4)

What would your life look like to “love perfectly”? I’ve been coming back to 1 Corinthians 13,

4 Love is patient, love is kind, it isn’t jealous, it doesn’t brag, it isn’t arrogant, 5 it isn’t rude, it doesn’t seek its own advantage, it isn’t irritable, it doesn’t keep a record of complaints, 6 it isn’t happy with injustice, but it is happy with the truth. 7 Love puts up with all things, trusts in all things, hopes for all things, endures all things.

What would it do for your life to always be patient, always kind, never jealous and never focused on yourself? To love perfectly? To love like Jesus?

You were created in God’s image, to love as He loves.

Blessings,

Pastor Matt

PS - Next week we’ll talk about why it is that we struggle to love perfectly as God loves.
